Judging

As a means of assuring that all contests receive the best possible judging, our hand picked ametuer judges will be required to attend a 2 hour BBQ Judging seminar. This seminar will be taught by a professional BBQ judge who has been judging for many years. The seminar will cover all aspects of being a BBQ judge.  The student judges will experience the following:

 

  • A walk through of the format of a BBQ competition
  • What characteristics to look for in each category’s entries
  • How to score an entry
  • Learn the rules and regulations that BBQ competitions have
  • Run through a mock BBQ Competition that includes Chicken, Ribs, Brisket and Pulled Pork samples


Judging seminars will be held in the Training Room at Massey Electric Company, 3204 Regal Drive, Alcoa. This is the industrial park behind West Chevrolet off of Alcoa Highway.

Training Dates: April 28th and April 29th at 6:30 - Judges will be contacted for their assigned night

Judging Rules

There will be blind judging only. Entries will be submitted in a numbered styrofoam container provided by the contest organizer.


  1. Judges may not fraternize with teams on contest day after Judge’s Orientation.

  2. Judging will be done by a 6 teams of 6 judges. (Only judges, Contest Reps and necessary support staff are allowed in judging area during the judging process. No other activities are permitted in the judging area, during judging process. )

  3. Each judge will score all the samples for appearance, taste, and tenderness.

  4. Total points per entry will determine the Winner within each classification.
